Grow, Garden, Grow !
It is time to plant the garden! We will grow pretty petunias and pansies. We will grow dainty daisies. We will grow great big sunflowers. Do you know how a garden grows? Let's find out. First we dig! We dig with a little shovel called a trowel. We dig a hole to put each seedling in. A seedling is a little plant that is grown from a tiny seed. When the hole is big enough, we take a seedling and put its roots into the hole. Then we fill the hole with dirt. This is a sunflower seedling. Sunflowers grow tall. We put this a sunflower seedling at the back of our garden. This is a daisy seedling. Daisies do not grow as tall as sunflowers. We put these seedlings front of the sunflowers. These are petunia and pansy seedlings. These plants do not grow tall. We put these seedlings in front of the daisies. Sunflowers, daisies, petunias, and pansies. We are going to have a beautiful garden! Our holes have been dug. Our seedlings have been planted. Now it is time to add water! Seedling need lots of water to help them grow beautiful flowers. Our holes have been dug. Our seedlings have been planted. Our seedlings have been watered. What else do the seedlings need to grow? Sunshine ! Sunlight helps plants to make their own food so they can grow big and strong. Plants make their food by a process called photosynthesis (foh-toh-SIN-the sis). This is how photosynthesis works. Plants have a special green substance called chlorophyll (KLOR-uh-fill) in their leaves. The sunlight shines on the leaves and joins with the chlorophyll. The chlorophyll has been touched by the sunlight. Now the chlorophyll mixes with water from the ground and a gas called carbon dioxide (CAR- bun die-AHK-side) from the air to make food for the plant. And something else happens at the same time. When the plant makes food, it also makes another gas called oxygen (AHK-suh-gin). The plant sends the oxygen into the air through it's leaves. Then animals and people breathe the oxygen ! Now our seedlings have been planted. They have water. They have sunlight. They make food to eat. What happens next? The seedlings begin to grow ! The seedlings grow up . The seedlings grow out. Look there, at the top of that plant. What are those? Those are buds! When the seedlings have lots of water and sunlight, they grow tall and wide. Then the plants begin to make their flowers. The beginning of a flower is called a bud. These are the parts of a flower. All of these parts are inside the bud. We water our plants. Our plants get more sunlight. Soon, the buds grow, and then they bloom into....flowers! Look at the great big sunflowers! See the dainty daisies? I love the pretty petunias and pansies ! We made a beautiful garden !
