Inside,  the  little  people  were  waiting,  the  beautiful  boy  in  front  of  them,  his  hands  outstretched.  "Biddy  Malone !" he  called.

Biddy  knew  that  was  the  way  of  the  little  people,  here  one  moment,  gone  the  next.  She  walked  back  to  her  house,  and  there,  in  the  light  of  the  porch,  she  saw  a  strange  thing.  A  large  black  ribbon  hung  on  the  door,  the  kind  that  folk  hung  out  when  they  were  in  mourning.

To  be  sure,  Biddy  Malone  loved  to  sing  and  dance. But  her  singing  was  like  a  rusty  gate  in  a  wild  west  wind,  and  when  she  dance,  her  great  dundering  feet  fell  over  each  other,  which  was  terrible  considering  Biddy  Malone  always  wanted  the  best  for  herself.  So  whenever  she  made  a  mistake,  she  kicked  and  screamed  something  awful,  her  temper  being  a  fine  fierce  thing.

A  young  bride  silently  sobs  on  the  floor  watching  her  mentally  disturbed  husband  gorge  on  chicken,  rub  his  greasy  hands  through  his  hair  and  scream  at  her  for  more,  just  another  chapter  in  the  couple's  violent  life  together.
